Are the silicone gel crystal litters on the market (respiratory and bacteria) safe for cats?
I am concerned that there may be long term health risks to cats who use the silicone litter products on the market - IE fresh step, tidy Cats Crystals are 2 that come to mind -but more on the market
The crystals are actually cleaner than anything else you can buy. However, like every other litter, you need to change it at the appropriate time.
The way the crystal litters work is that they actually absorb the liquids, retain the odor, and release the moisture.
As the crystals begin to reach their peak performance, ie they are full and can;t hold anymore, they turn to dust. So, as the litter turns to dust, you need to change the litter.
The best way to utilize the crystal litters is to actually use LESS of it in the box. -- about an inch deep, no more. If you use more than that, you will want to leave the litter in longer because it isn't "used up" but some of it will become dusty. So, just an inch deep. Remove it weekly. Stir it up every time you remove the hard waste.
I can't imagine uising anything but crystals anymore!
