What is this "Old Fashioned" black licorice flavored cocktail?
I was in Fiji and the bartender made me a drink that he called "old fashioned" (like something my grandparents would drink). It tasted mildly like black licorice. It was clear and was not overly alcoholic tasting. I loved it and no bartenders seem to know about it. I think he used a liqueur that starts with a "G" and might have been in a tall, pyramid shaped bottle (maybe). It might have been mixed with some kind of soda/tonic.
A traditional "Old Fashioned" consists basically of whiskey, sugar water, and bitters. Not sure what would have added the licorice flavor to your drink, except maybe the bitters. Since he used what sounds like Galliano (the tall, pyramid-shaped bottle), I'm guessing he made some variation of the old fashioned, perhaps a regional variant.
You could check the site www.idrink.com to search for a drink by ingredient and see if you find something similar. At the very least, you'll have fun trying!
