How safe is Santo Domingo for first time tourist?
I'm going to DR in March and I just wanted a heads up on if its safe to travel outside of resorts and to local streets. If anyone has any suggestions on things to do and where to go that will be great too.
It is as safe as most US city's of that size.Just use your head.Do not wear any expensive jewelry. Don't carry a lot of cash on you and put it in your front pockets.Some in both.You don't need a wallet or a purse but if you do carry one don't put anything in it that you wouldn't like to lose.Do not trust the hotel safe in your room.You may be able to leave some in the hotel safe behind the desk. But you would not be the first to lose all that was there.Things of Value disappear in the DR fast.Do not trust a dominican.They are there to get what they can from you.Don 't get drunk and bring home a prostitute and take a shower or pass out and expect your things to be there in the morning.Don 't let two dominicans in your room at the same time.One will rob you while the other distracts you.Be care full if she invites you to her place. There may be other people waiting to rob you once your inside.This goes for both sexes as there are many young good looking men that are there to service the lady's. They will take what they can get.It is safe here, but two main points. One ... USE YOUR HEAD Two ... DO NOT TRUST A DOMINICAN
