What is a wine-based liquor?
I went to a bar one night in Houston & I guess they only had a beer & wine license b/c when I tried to order a Vodka tonic they said they couldn't do it & something about their liquors being wine-based. Can some1 explain?
Some establishments dont have a "full liquor license" and only have the permit to serve beer and wine. In order to expand their cocktail list they can purchase wine-based liquors to replace the real thing.
For example, they would make a margarita using something called "Tequesta" which is a wine made from oranges and tequila flavoring added.
There is a website that sells these wine based imitations. Here is their advert for a fake vodka:
"You will enjoy the smoothness of a premium Vodka yet Klir Red remains legal with your beer & wine license! Bloody Mary, Screwdriver, Sex on the Beach, Kamikaze, and Cape Codder are only a few of the many vodka-based cocktails that you can prepare using Premium Blend Klir Red. (Premium orange wine with natural flavors added.)"
So if you ordered the vodka tonic you would have known there was not real vodka in it.
To the other answerer:
The bars with only beer and wine licenses are not allowed to sell any high alcohol liquors so even though brandy is made from wine, it is not a "wine-based liquor" in this case.

Patricia Green Notorious Pinot Noir 2009 Wine
