In 1994, desire to produce an ice wine, or Eiswein, as it is called in Germany, prompted us to adopt an innovative program whereby Scheurebe grapes would be picked late in season and then commercially frozen, thus concentrating their already-high sugar levels. We called wine Eisrebe. Although German Eisweins are produced from fruit that is actually picked frozen from vine, we found that by freezing grapes ourselves we could fashion a delicious dessert wine that is viscous and smooth, with excellent acidity to balance sweetness. 2009 Scheurebe has delicate aromas of apricot, citrus blossom, honey, and creme caramel followed by a rich and unctuous texture integrated with well balanced, bright acidity and a persistent finish. wine is a brilliant orange-yellow rose petal colour with a very fine, profuse and sustained mousse. nose is characterized by small red berries, mainly currant. On palate wine is vigorous and well balanced. A fine, fresh, fruity wine with well-integrated tannins and a hint of spice on lengthy finish. Ruinart Rose is produced from a blend of 55% Pinot Noir and 45% Chardonnay from best of recent vintages. All of fruit is from premiers crus vineyards. This is our smallest bottling of Notorious blend since quantity-challenged 2004 vintage when we also bottled just six barrels of wine under this particular label. This blend changes each vintage based on what we think are most exotic barrels cellar has to offer. In 2009 we were extremely limited in barrels we did use our Notoroius technique on and they happened to all come from Balcombe Vineyard and there are only four of them so just about 90 cases will be produced which is our lowest production on this wine since 2002. What is truly recognizable even at this youthful age is length of this wine. There is so much substance that is so well-balanced that it carries on and on. Buy it for its concentration, depth and exotic fruit but cellar and savor it for it length and complexity. This is a beautiful, beautiful wine.
